If you do good, you will feel good. Scientifically being generous activates the area of the brain called the striatum. The striatum is a part of the brain that is connected to the motor and reward system. Donating money can make a huge difference and really change lives, I’m not trying to take anything away from that. However, I want to share five different strategies and ways to give back without donating money. Furthermore, I’ve found that it can even be more rewarding to do one of these activities.
Spending a day or afternoon helping an organization that you care about will not only help the organization but will also be very fulfilling. Time is one of everyone’s most valuable resources. Volunteering your time will be incredibly impactful.
Donate Old Clothes
Go through your closet and donate your clothes that you no longer wear. Whether it’s because the fashion trends have changed, or you no longer fit in the clothes or just stopped wearing that item, it will be good to get rid of the clothes. People can benefit from your old clothes. Two of the best places to donate clothing to are: Goodwill and Salvation Army.
Mentor The Younger Generation
The youth is the future. Mentoring the younger generation is an amazing way to give back to your community. While the younger generation may be more technically savvy and understand some things that seem foreign, there is no better way to learn than through experience. Sharing your experiences with the younger generation will help them drastically.
Prepare and Serve Food
Everyone needs to eat. Preparing and serving food at soup kitchens, food banks, homeless shelters, and other similar places will positively impact the lives of everyone you serve. Also, there is something that is so gratifying about serving someone food and seeing the smile across their face as they eat it!
Do Random Acts of Kindness
I’ve written before about the benefits of random acts of kindness and different strategies for these random acts. Whether it’s holding the door for a stranger or giving someone a compliment, those small interactions have the ability to completely change their day.
What strategy will you use to give back without writing a check? What do you already do?
