Growing up I remember being so excited for Halloween every year. Not only was it an opportunity to dress like whoever my favorite athlete or superhero was at the time, but also an excuse to eat copious amounts of candy! At school teachers and fellow students would give out candy, I’d go around my neighborhood Trick or Treating and would always opt for the treat. It was the best day of the year for my sweet tooth but one of the worst for my health.
As a parent, now, I love helping my kids figure out their costumes for Halloween. It really is a ton of fun. I also enjoy giving out treats to kids that come by our house. However, as a parent and doctor, I’m not the biggest fan of all of the candy that they eat on Halloween. That is why I’ve decided to give healthy treats this year. Here are my three favorite healthy treats for Halloween.
Baby carrots come in pre-packaged serving sized bags that are great for giving out. Carrots are a great snack as they are a good source of fiber, vitamin K, and potassium. They also have a number of antioxidants and are roughly 90% water. The added bonus is that they are orange!
Raw almonds are one of the healthiest snack options around. One serving of almonds has six grams of protein, has nearly 40% of your daily recommended vitamin E, and is high in Magnesium. Raw almonds are also sold in pre-packaged serving sized bags.
Tangerines look similar to a pumpkin, so that’s a great start! They are a variety of the Mandarin orange and are smaller in size. Tangerines help reduce inflammation, improves digestion, and supports the immune system. They are a great snack and, since we peel their skin before eating, are very easy to safely give out.
All three of my favorite healthy treats to give on Halloween, Carrots, Raw Almonds, and Tangerines pack a nutritious punch. They also are very safe to give out, as they have a low risk of spreading germs.
