Winning Back to School… Part 2

During the summer it can seem so much easier to be healthy and develop healthy habits. That doesn’t have to be the case. In my last blog article, Winning Back to School… Part 1, I touched on three items to keep in your kids backpack that help with the random things that happen throughout the day, hand sanitizer, tissues, and bandaids. In this article, I am going to focus on nutrition. You should be sure to include a reusable water bottle and healthy snacks. 

1) Reusable Water Bottle

Hydration is probably the single most important and yet least followed element of nutrition. We are supposed to drink eight glasses of water per day! You may be thinking that half a gallon of water is unnecessary and too much. All to often, people only drink water when they are thirsty, but by then it is too late. By making sure that your kid has a reusable water bottle, that they actually fill-up throughout the day, they will stay properly hydrated. Students that are well hydrated are more alert. 

2) Healthy Snacks

While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with snack time or eating snacks between meals, that depends on what you’re eating. In my opinion, there are too many unhealthy snacks in our schools. The best way to make sure that you and your family are eating healthy snacks is to bring them from home. If you pack a snack, or two, for your kids, you will ensure that they are eating healthy snacks. Last year I wrote an entire article about how to snack healthily. The four keys that I highlighted are: 1) eat slower, 2) be mindful, 3) pack a snack, and 4) stay natural.
